Book I’m Reading: The Murder of Mary Russell by Laurie R. King

Knowing how much I love Sherlock Holmes, a friend recommended The Murder of Mary Russell. Sherlock Holmes is one of my two favorite fictional characters (Lara Croft is the other). The Murder of Mary Russell takes place late in Holmes' life. He has married a young woman, Mary Russell. Laurie R. King creates a backstory for Clara Hudson, Sherlock's housekeeper, which leads to a murder years in the making. It's an intriguing look at life in England and Australia in the 1800s and focuses more on Clara Hudson than Sherlock. But, of course, Sherlock solves the murder. Reading required me to let go of my Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes, but it was enjoyable. I love trying to solve the murder before Holmes. I never do.

Success Story: Five Years Cancer Free

Today (July 19) marks five years since the call that changed my life. It was shocking news. Having ten days before my first surgery was a whirlwind. I was fortunate to have people I didn't know willing to talk to me about their experiences. These talks gave me valuable information and comfort. If you know someone who has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, please let them know they can call or text me. This week, I was able to speak with a woman in Canada who was recently diagnosed. She had questions about implants, reconstruction, and living flat. I was so happy to be a sounding board. It is a frightening diagnosis, and hopefully, I can be a source of comfort.

Product I'm Loving: Bartesian

It's like a coffee maker for mixed drinks. It is with surprise I tell you how much I love the Bartesian. I love that I can use my chosen brand of alcohol, and the mixers are not too sweet. It was a massive hit at my birthday party. There are over 50 mixed drink flavor capsules available. My favorites are Lemon Drop and Cosmopolitan. You can customize how strong you want your drink. I often opt for a mocktail and fill it with ice and club soda.

Happy Anniversary (and a day) Gail! If someone needed to talk about breast cancer - particularly those first diagnosed - I would recommend you in a fraction of a second. Your combined intellect and compassion are ideal to guide another through those unimaginably horrible first days. XO
